Ten Yard Fight
4-10-99
interview with drummer Ben Chused

Ten Yard Fight started off as a joke band and has become one of the biggest hardcore bands around. How did that transition occur?
Basically once the demo got out there and we got such positive feedback about it, we decided to keep doing the band. We were all having fun, and we didn't think that so many people would like us. We were really motivated by everyone who liked the demo so much.

How did the whole football theme come around with TYF?
The football thing wasn't my idea. John Lacroix and Anthony Pappalardo just called me one night freaking out and they were like "We're starting a football straight edge band and you are the first round draft pick for drummer!" I didn't really know what was going on. These guys were freaking out and I didn't really know how to play drums. They read me all the lyrics and they were the funniest thing I had ever heard. They even had football shaped stickers and we were each assigned numbers and starting positions.... It was just an idea to do something totally funny.

Did they play football in high school and not cut it or anything?
John played football in junior high, but that's it. None of us played football in high school. I don't know, man. It was just like a spur of the moment type thing, like "let's do something funny and name it after a cool video game."

I got that game for a friend as a joke and it was surprisingly ok.
It's a good game. When Nintendo first came out it was the shit.

Do you ever regret the football path or do you think that helped get the band started?
I think it totally helped the band. It was making hardcore fun instead of boring. We still have some football lyrics in our new songs.

You have a new cd out on EVR how does that compare to your previous releases?
I think it kicks everything else's ass. It's our best stuff by far. I'm really psyched. I'm proud of the music and I like the layout allot.

Will TYF stay with EVR will you try to move on in the future?
I think we are going to stay with EVR as long as we are a band. I like working with EVR. They are close by, they do all our merchandise, they are good to us. We can owe them a million dollars for merch and they let us take our time to pay for it.

How far do you think TYF will go, and how far will you try to go?
I think we've already gone above and beyond what we set out to do. I don't know. I'd like to do another full length and go to Europe and California at least one more time. It would be cool to go to Japan.

How has Thrasher helped out TYF and how good is the band at skating?
There was just that one write-up a while ago. Two guys in the band skate, that's it. They are pretty good, but used to be more serious. I can't tell how the article helped us - probably not that much.

Anthony had a cast on your summer tour, was that a skating accident?
Nope. It was a BMX accident. He jumped this huge flight of stairs and smacked right into a wall. He didn't even go to the hospital for weeks after it happened. He was in denial.

What is your opinion about the hc bands that have “sold out” and bands like Korn and Limp Bizkit who are called HC by the public?
Well, you'll have to be more specific than just "bands that have sold out." I think Korn and Limp Bizkit suck. I don't know anything about those bands except that they suck.

Like people say that SICK OF IT all have sold out cause they are on Fat or like Earth Crisis on Road Runner and bands making videos. How do you feel about all of that?
Nothing wrong with making a video. I remember when Blood Sweat and No Tears came out and people were calling SOIA sellouts because they weren't on Rev any more. I mean, SOIA was on a major label and now they are on Fat. They are like an exception to the situation because they are so hard working and have done so much to help the hardcore scene. Both EC and SOIA I think have lost touch a little bit with the reasons they started playing in hardcore bands, but they both need to make a living playing music. I have a lot of respect for both bands, but I would never want TYF to play an 18+ show or a $12 show (if I can help it).

How did the summer tour go? Best memories from the tour? Great stories?
The Summer tour had some good points, but it was a little bit discouraging. A lot of kids were causing problems, and some of the shows were pretty bad. All in all, it was a lot of fun. I have a lot of cool memories, mostly form California. We hung out there for a week straight and jumped off bridges and just caused trouble at the beach. It was awesome.

Lots of great bands have been coming out of Boston lately. What are some smaller bands that you think people should check out?
The bands in Boston are all awesome. Bane, Fastbreak, In My Eyes, and Reach The Sky are all awesome bands and they all deserve a lot of support.

If you could have any job in the world what would it be?
I would like to work for a professional sports team. I think that would be really exciting. My dream job would be to own a big casino in Las Vegas.

You wanna be in the mafia?
The mafia has very little influence over Las Vegas compared to 20-30 years ago. I would want to be legit. Nothing illegal.

If you had to start a pop band what would the name be and how would your song and video go?
I would be a solo rapper named Big Ben. My number one jam would be about running shit and takin' out sucka MC's. The video would be me in the hot tub with mad girls couting all my loot smokin' a cigar.

You like rap or other music besideds HC?
I was honestly listening to RUN DMC and the Fat Boys when they first came out. I really like a lot of 80's heavy metal. Guns n Roses are one of my all time favorites. I'm pretty much strictly into hardcore right now.

What is your view on how HC and SXE have immortalized Star Wars? Are you excited for the new ones coming out?
I think it's dumb. I like Star Wars just as much as the next guy, but I don't see any connection between Star Wars and hardcore. I am pretty psyched for the new Star Wars movie, but there is no way it will be as classic as the other ones.

Whats in the future for TYF?
The new record just came out. We are going to do a weekend in Puerto Rico during May and a European tour with In My Eyes at the end of the Summer. Nothing else is planned right now.

Any final words of wisdom for anyone?
I always have trouble with this one... Hey, have fun and don't take shit from anyone and party like it's 1999. Get the new TYF. I like it. And you should too.
