Built To Last
This interview was done with Burt To Last, vocals, on 8/9/99.

The band has gone through some lineup changes. What were those and what is the current lineup?
Man we've been through like 9 different members in the last 3 years. A lot of bands would have broken up, but 4 of us in the band are close so we stuck it out... We have a solid line up now and we are ready to tour our asses off.

Do you think will change the sound of the band and/or your next release?
Well the new cd is all recorded. It will be out in late September. The sound is the same except more melodic and better written songs.

Your up coming release is called “And Knowing Is Half The Battle”. Did you get the title from GIJoe?
Yep, it’s a GIJoe's thing. The cover has a live shot on it and the cobra symbol rising behind it.

Who is your favorite GIJoe character?
Cobra Commander.

Did you like him better with the silver mask or when it was like a cloth whit holes in it?
I like the silver mask.

What label is the cd going to be out on?
Resurrection AD Records. They treat us so good, they really back there bands.

What kind of message does Built To Last try to send as a band?
Well, we are not political band. I guess our message is just go to shows, have fun stage dive, and sing along cuz to us that’s what it is all about.

Is the song “Its On Fire” a metaphor for anything?
Yeah, its about how we all feel about hardcore, but it can be about anything you feel strong about. It’s just about that burning feeling you get when you love something. Haha that probably sounded cheesie.

Where are you headed for your next tour and where have you been on previous tours?
Well in October we are doing 6 shows up the west coast, and in November we go back east for 2 weeks. We’ve done the west coast a lot of times and did a us tour once but, next year we plan to be out for 4 months doing a Europe tour and the us.

How would you compare a show on the east coast to a show on the west coast?
We get more support on the west coast so, shows on the west are more fun for us. But on the east coast like in New Jersey the shows are good for us. We just need to play the east coast more often but the kids on both sides are all super cool.

I heard a tour story that you meet the wrestler Goldberg. What was that like?
Haha it was awesome. We were in south Dakota, it was like 3 in the morning and we stopped off at a little diner and we saw this big guy with another big guy. I looked at him and said, “holy shit that's Goldberg and Rick Steiner.” So we got pictures with Goldberg but Steiner was a dick. Also we gave him a Built To Last shirt and he wore it in a fitness magazine. So that was awesome. That picture will be somewhere in the cd. We also met Grandpa Munser from the Munsters.

Do you watch wrestling?
Um not really

Well you should! Do you have any other good tour stories or fun things you do to kill time on tour? Well we are always constantly pulling pranks on each other shit like that. Touring is fun but you get van fever so you get weird sometimes. Haha.

How do you feel about Mtv passing off bands like Korn and Limpbizkit as hardcore?
Haha, it’s so funny. I really don't even pay attention to that stuff. Both of those bands suck, that's all I know.

If you could meet anyone who would it be and why?
Probably I’d say Bill Clinton. Than I could tell him face to face why he sucks so bad.

Are you into political stuff?
Naw, not really. I try not to worry myself over politics.

Any topics in general that you would like to give your opinion on?
Not really.

Any final words of wisdom?
Go to shows and have fun, that's it.
